As if we needed more to do, I've decided to plant a garden this spring, for the first time in 10 years. Normally, gardening and Silicon Valley life are not compatible: gardens take time, and time is the most precious resource hereabouts.
But my current gig gives me flexible hours and I work at home when I'm not traveling. And, 10 years ago, I put in a garden space (photo) that should be as easy to handle as a garden gets. The whole garden is 75 square feet - 8 3x3-foot planter beds plus some pots in a side yard that was dead space before I built the planters.
Monday I'm off to Ladera Nursery for the hard part - 20 sacks of compost and soil: I already placed my seed order on www.burpee.com. Once the soil and plants are in, upkeep should be easy - and gardens are very good places to think. We're putting in heirloom tomatoes, golden beets, snap peas, pole beans, lettuce, golden cucumbers, kitchen herbs and a few flowers.
