CreativePro.com editor Pam Pfiffner bought her first e-book while researching a project, and thought it was pretty cool. Until she found out she couldn't use the book anywhere but her laptop - it had self-encrypted to that machine, without warning from the publisher. She notes the book wasn't much cheaper than new, and more expensive than a used copy she could have read anywhere. eBooks are an uphill battle anyway, but stuff like not warning people is just stupid...

Bruce Sterling, one of my favorite Sci Fi authors and sometime journalist, has a very interesting piece in print Wired this month. Sterling argues that the Persian Gulf War was Space War 1, Yugoslavia was Space War 2 and Afghanistan is Space War 3, in which now-perfected weapons and information systems make it possible for U.S. 'Nintendo Generals' to detect and nail things as small and fleeting as a Toyota.

The U.S. has won the Space Race: the only way to fight the U.S. is with terrorism, which is a scary, but not particularly effective method, unless we're talking rogue nukes. The article presents some frightening scenarios, suggesting that North Korea, well-financed Colombians and the Pakistan-India nuclear stand-off are a lot more dangerous than Al Quaeda.

Extending the range of an AirPort 802.11b hub: Roger Ridey, knowing my Wi-Fi Web cam plight, sent me the link to Constantin von Wentzel 's AirPort Range Extender page. He offers very thorough instructions, illustrated with clear photos, on how to attach a higher-gain Lucent antenna to the ABS.

Roger's note reminded me that my AirPort only works now because previously I'd gone to Constantin's 'How to repair fried ABS filter capacitors' page'. Constantin was even kind enough to email his opinion of the replacement capacitors I found at Fry's...

It was cold in Menlo last night: Weather Underground reported the low as 37 degrees F last night. Dotcom Garden's 'telemetry' recorded 40 degrees in the somewhat protected side yard. I put empty pots over the peppers... just too cold.

Garden advice in this morning's email: 'The Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings at Embarcadero will give you a selection of potatoes that you will never see in the supermarket. Take an old plastic bucket and drill some holes in the bottom. Fill one third with compost, set four or five potatoes, add one third more of compost and set more potatoes. Fill the bucket or container with compost and connect up your water feed pipe. In a couple of months time the egg sized new potatoes will delight you with their flavor". From Cyril Gleeson.. and I love new potatoes...
