Whoa.. these Japanese vintage Mac cats are serious. So I did a Google on 'Mac SE power supply resistor' and up came this page, with everything I need to know. Even cracking the early Mac boxes requires knowledge and special tools. An illustrated, English-language, step-by-step guide to repair the power supply problem, which was a common failure - albeit late in life - for early Macs.

Like I need another project: Wired has a writer in Japan - who's been prowling Akihabara where they discovered a used Mac shop (even Japan doesn't have a used PC shop). One photo shows a Mac SE 30 running Mac OS X...! Turns out the SE 30 has an iMac board in it.. so I went prowling in our garage, and came up with this even-more-vintage Mac SE (tag says it has 1 MB RAM, 800k floppy and 'monster' 20MB HD). Hmmmmmmmm.... but I know this thing has a blown power supply for the tube. As Alanis Morisette would say: ' this could get messy...'

No wonder I'm a Mac fan. PCs drive me nuts: I researched virtually every detail of the conversion of my bookshelf P3 box to a Linux server for the Garden. I found a PCI Wi-Fi card that had Linux drivers. I found a USB Webcam that had Linux drivers. I rounded up my Red Hat 7.1 install disks, and Linux the Complete Reference manual: no obvious issues.

Had everything neatly laid out and then cracked the box to swap network cards. The Wi-Fi card and adaptor are 1/4 inch too long to fit in the cramped P3 enclosure... and there are circuits on that last quarter inch - I can't trim it down. Arrghhhh... ! They may be cheap, but you get what you pay for, I guess.

The softer side of Fry's: so, I mentioned that the $99 aluminum chassis had a blue flourescent light in the box, meaning I could return the one I bought. With my $21 refund slip in hand, I prowled the aisles, only to discover that mini-Cuisnarts, one of the few cook appliances that I lack, were on sale for $34, marked down from $60.

Problem was, they only had blue and black ones: the de rigeur white models, except for the demonstrator, were sold out. So I cut a deal with a sales rep on the demo model: $24. After deducting the credit, baby Cuisinart came home for $3 plus tax...

The first Dotcom Garden Friday luncheon took place today. Guests were Ken Feehan, former Apple colleague, and stepson John Getze. As luck would have it, we were rained out of the garden, and had to eat indoors. Ken has some very interesting ideas about aggregating content and user location. Menu: sliced chicken breast and melted Gouda on sourdough rolls with garden lettuce, red and gold tomatoes and dill mayonaise with home-made yellow pepper soup.

Maybe Linda and I should go live in a Yurt. It would save remodelling hassles. Yurts, among the oldest indigenous shelter designs, were originally conceived by nomadic Mongolians, whose Shamanist beliefs dictated the round shape that connects North and South, West and East. Modern yurts, featuring space-age materials, cost $5,000 to $10,000 and can be quite pleasant.

Dotcom Garden update: radishes, kholrabi and beets are up as of this morning. All the peas have sprouted, and we should start harvesting lettuce in 10 days or so... Still wotking on the Webcam and garden server, though..
