Dean Kamen's latest patent filing is for both the design of, and a method to manufacture, a Stirling Engine, according to a story in the New York Times. The Stirling engine was designed in 1816 by a Scottish minister. In nearly two centuries, no one has succeeded in making it a mass-market success...

Modern Miners hereabouts are digging in databases, rather than dirt, an idea that occurred to me after yesterday's hike around the old New Almaden Mine site, and after reading this headline in The Scientist this morning. Tough work either way, but I think I'd opt for the modern job...

Spy Mac: a new computer museum has a Mac SE 1891 ST, a metal, Tempest-sheilded version of the Mac SE that showed up at Weird Stuff. There's no record of such a machine exisitng. A prototype? I'm still debating what to do with my SE...
