All known particles in the universe belong to one of two groups, fermions or bosons. Fermions have half-integer spin (such as 1/2) and make up ordinary matter. Bosons have integer spin (such as 1 or 2) and are the particles that carry forces, like gravity and electromagnetic radiation, between the fermions. In their ground state, fermions have negative energy, while bosons have positive energy. Supergravity posits that each boson is paired with a fermion, and thus their ground state energies cancel out. From Stephen Hawking's new book Universe in a Nutshell.
