Success? Well, it seems like the new Linux machine is up, and most everything is working. My fond hope is that it will continue to operate for ages as the pain of setting it up was considerable.
I'm not bashing Linux: it is what it is, and the price is right, and the technology is as good as anything available today in many respects.
My big problem with it is that, while I am reasonably technically literate, Linux changes frequently and in arbitrary ways. If you are like me, someone who doesn't use it every day, then coming to a configuration job once or twice a year is painful. The tools change: I don't often even know what the new tools are for a given function, and when I find them after prowling UseNet and LinuxQuestions.org, they almost certainly work differently than the previous tool.
Few apps in Linux have anything like the polish and consistency of even a Windows app, much less Mac apps, and this is the source of my frustration. ...and doubtless the reason Linux hasn't blown everything else, Microsoft included, out of the water...
