"Wages of scandal": an Alexa Research spinout Discovery Mining uses commodity computer search technology (a la The Internet Archive) to index and find 'smoking gun' documents in very large data collections, e.g. the 100 million emails at issue in the Enron bankruptcy - from Rafe Needleman's current What's Next. Brewster Khale was behind Alexa: he's currently driving a satellite-Internet-connected 'Bookmobile' around the country in support of sane copyright laws...

All of Edisons's inventions except the light bulb are obsolete, writes Neil Savage in Discover this month.. The phonograph, telegraph, mimeograph and stock ticker are all gone, and even their replacements, have more modern technologies waiting in the wings. (To be accurate Edison did not invent but did develop the first practical light bulb). Not a bad run... and Edison is still the image of the American inventor...

Two firsts this weekend: I planted tulips and daffodils (spouse claims she's wanted them for 22 years, but I don't remember any 'lobbying') and I put winter vegetables - peas, lettuce and onions - into Dotcom Garden. Winter vegetables grow slowly thanks to short days: it's a different feel altogether from the bursting-with-life spring and summer garden...
