Venus, 27 years ago today: these 2 photos were taken by Russian Venera probes to Venus 27 years ago. Both probes failed moments after returning images, but that's not surprising given the pressure and temerature on Venus (where it's hot enough to melt lead). Amazing: unmanned probes were doing a fine job of probing the solar system way back when...

Guns in the cockpit: I really don't think this is a good idea... guns are always more problematic than they seem. A gun in a household doesn't improve safety, just the reverse. People who live in households where guns are present are much more likely - I think the figure is like 8 times more likely - to die or be injured than those who live in households where there are no guns (that should be pretty obvious).

Anyway, I just stumbled on security guru Bruce Shneier's essay on same. Good reading.. and Shneier makes no bones about poorly thought out policies and is happy to walk one through the real ramifications of ideas like this - he's a full-on security freak, no other axes to grind . What does a terrorist want more than a gun on a plane? And now, every airline is going to put at least one on every airplane? Heaven help the frequent flier...
