Bill Gates disses Newton, praises Tablet PC: wierd, Gates says the Newton created a negative environment for tablets... but Newton wasn't a tablet. The Go machine was a tablet, but Gates and Co. killed it by announcing a pen-based version of Windows (which they never actually wrote). David Pogue wrote a good review of the Tablet PC in yesterday's NYT. His verdict... nope, not there yet... I concur...

Valuations of venture funded startups: the Merc's Matt Marshall writes about a speech given by Harvard prof Paul Gompers, in which he proposes VCs do something about more open and impartial reporting on venture-funded startups, lest the Feds decide to do it for them. Gompers and fellow prof. Josh Lerner both see successful VCs becoming more efficient and corporate, a la investment banking in the early 60s...

It is pouring rain in Menlo Park, CA this morning, as this picture out the back door shows. High winds last night - over 70 miles an hour. Woke up to find most of someone's tree down in my side yard. Cable is down, but power is still on. First winter storm... at least it's relatively warm...

Is Mac OS X slow? Slashdot asks. Consensus seems to be some apps are slower than Windows or Linux counterparts, but overall it's about the same... I think the Quartz graphics susbsystem is slow, but it's also better and more feature-rich...
