Referrer spam: I noticed a huge spike in hits on my company's Web server last week. I went in to the referrer logs to see what had happened - we're barely out of stealth and weren't doing any heavy marketing programs. The hits were all from one referrer - which turned out to be a porn site. Doc Searls and Dave Winer have both mentioned this: apparently they target Weblogs, hoping to drive traffic - but this was the first I'd heard of hitting a company Web site... Comments 4:34:26 PM

Current reading: the Venture Capital Cycle, by Paul Gompers and Josh Lerner. My column next Monday, in The Independent, is about the sea change in venture capital. Venture capital is critical to the development of the information economy: Lerner argued in Upside (the last issue) that VCs need to be more efficient. Gompers told a gathering of VCs in San Francisco last week that it was time to standardize the methods of valuing startups. VC is only about 30 years old as an industry, as recently as 1965 only about $100 million a year was invested in venture funds, vs $1.7 billion in this past (anemic) quarter.... Comments 4:28:58 PM
