Is the universe a computer? Could it be that everything in it, is information being manipulated by the universal program? You can make the case that life is data (DNA), but some quantum theorists think atoms are, too in this article from this month's Wired. This seems to jibe with much in Wolfram's new book, too...

Bizarre DDoS 'attack': Like most startup people, I wear a lot of hats, including de facto webmaster at my company, in which role I noticed a huge spike in hits on our server. Indeed, we received 26,000 requests for non-existent content from 120 different hosts: it looked like a zombie attack, where many compromised zombie computers are programmed to clobber a target server.

A little detective work, though, and we discovered that a porn site that resells its content to other adult sites had put an erroneous link on their site: they had mistyped an IP address, resulting in an unintentional 'attack'. The good news was that, a. our server chugged along withou a problem, and b. the porn site's ISP moved quickly to fix it. Earlier I had thought this was referrer spam but it was more complicated than that...
