Birthday bash: stepson Jonh Getze turned 28 today... so we went out for a celebratory dinner. Pictured, left to right are Ms. Julie Brown, John, me and spouse Linda. I'm very proud of John: he's an econ major (gets As and Bs) at USF, and has shown up and helped his parents with difficult jobs at CyberSource and Ventanis, our respective employers. John has a gift for spotting consumer trends, particularly fashion and music, well ahead of the curve. Julie photographs well, does she not?

Rob Levinson: " I needed a change in attitude. I could no longer view myself as an out-of-luck and out-of-work marketer; rather, I needed to acknowledge my value and seek opportunities to express my talents. Until I saw myself as an appealing solution, no one else would either." It's surprisingly hard to market one's self, even for marketers...

The Assotron, of which Richard Eggleston writes: " I know it marks me out as a kiddie, but I think this is the funniest thing I have seen in many years of being on the net.. I suggest you try it with the Whitehouse and Microsoft sites...." Don't you dare try it with Apple's 'Switcher' pages... or gulker.com...

New Comments feature placed after every post: well new to gulker.com... It's a Radio feature (Radio being the very nice Web log tool I use to manage this site). Somehow, over the years (we used Dave Winer's Frontier before Radio) the macros that generate the feature were deleted from the page template code, along with another macro that lists www.gulker.com on the Userland Community page-read rankings server. Both now restored...

Whoa! Check out the quality difference between these 2 versions of the Santa Train photo. One below is a straight export (as a 300 by 225 pixel image) from iPhoto: this one, to the left, is from Photoshop 7.0 (with a sharpen applied after a bicubic downsampling). iPhoto resampling is pretty basic, by comparison....

Scoble says he missed the Santa Train this year... so here's another picture. This one was shot on film with a Contax and a 20mm lens, the one below was shot with a CoolPix. The wide lens on the 35mm camera makes a difference...

Mouse and me and you are not much different... in fact there are only about 300 genes difference out of the about 30,000 that make up our respective genomes. Nature has a special Web site containing papers by researchers who have sequenced and compared the mouse genome with the human counterpart. This has generated a ton of news: researchers think that 90% of genetic diseases are the same in mice and humans...

Lost and Found: one of the features on the new gulker.com is Google search... which helped me find an essay about content management systems that I had misplaced. Interesting: I just trust Google to be there...
