IDG has cancelled Macworld Expo Tokyo 2003, citing a lack of exhibitor interest (from News.com via MacInTouch). Tough times for trade shows... though Mac shows have proven relatively durable... and Japanese Mac fans are fanatical....

The Bad Sex Prize is actually a literary award, given for the worst description of sex in a contemporary novel. Really. Gleaned from Ralf Zeigermann's interesting blog...

Crunch time for Apple, an opinion by James McGuire on OsOpinion, doesn't really make any new points. Curiously, he says Macs have to be more Windows compatible - but most Mac users happily chug along on Windows networks all the time with (often) fewer problems than their Windows peers experience (thanks largely to Office for Mac). And OS X has built-in connectivity to Windows networks. Why is it crunch time, now? Apple's having, by and large, fewer problems than most PC companies... how many other PC companies are opening new stores and sitting on a pile of cash?

Blogger vs. NYT reporter: blogger, wireless consultant Alan Reiter is squaring off against John Markoff, tech reporter for the New York Times. Reiter says he was misquoted and misinterpreted in Markoff's story about Cometa Networks, backed by IBM, Intel, AT&T and venture funds. Journalists know that there is no magic in working for a media outlet - there's just training and the theoretical oversight of editors.... spotted on 'Scripting News'...

Is Outlook the Next Windows? How companies accessorize Outlook -- and the danger in doing so. Rafe Needleman's latest column. He points out that plug-ins and extensions are 'grudge' buys at best, and there's the ever-present risk that the app vendor will incude your feature in the next rev...

Web services: last night I noticed that this Web site was loading rather slowly... an investigation revealed that the comments server at Userland was slow for some reason. The comments link at the end of this and other posts has a bracket showing the number of comments that have been posted in response to the item. That number is generated by a javascript that retrieves the count from the Userland server... so if the server is down or slow, there's a delay while each of these scripts times out.

Which made me realize how much I already rely on Web services. I author this site in an app, Radio that, in my case, runs on the Web. I use Google search to make it easy for readers to find stuff, and a Web based stats package, Summary. I use Blogdex and BlogStreet and the Userland Community server to try to figure out how gulker.com fits into the world. My garden page has weather stats from Weather Underground.

In short, without much hype or fanfare, I already rely on Web services. It's an ad hoc thing, with no commitment or passion or arguments about .Net vs. Sun One or whatever. It's just happening, organically, using easy things like HTML and javascript. Hmmm... may be a column, here...
