Our Net 'service is back, sort of. I note that ping times - between packets - vary from 2 seconds and more to 70 milliseconds, so the 'service' level is debatable. gulker.com has been off line for a week waiting for line checks, a 2-hour visit by a technician who probed my network and wiring, etc. etc. It's pretty clear that this is a problem at XO - namely a problem with a DSLAM card somewhere, managed by Covad, as it happens. I will eat humble pie, if I'm wrong. But I don't think so... this 'service' sucks. It's not cheap, either.

One thing I do know, is that there are 2 XO Communications - one is a surprisingly caring organization, evident in about 1 in 5 of the calls I've made to support in the last 6 days, and - get this - a call they made to me. The other 80% of the time, one gets the other XO, an arrogant, clueless, incapable and just stupid organization which richly deserves the Chapter 11 straits they find themselves in... Please, gods-of-bandwidth, let me stay on the Net in '03... and please allow free markets to engender the capable competition that would get my business - and everybody elses's in about a microsecond...

Been off the Net for almost a week and I am completely frustrated by XO Communications inability to fix my DSL service. As of this morning, after another frustrating phone call with a technician who said there was nothing that could be done (putting the blame on a failure by Covad to reset a DSLAM card), some sort of conectivity mysteriously appeared. Ping times are over a second, however, and 70% of packets are being lost, so I hardly call this 'service';. This is supposed to be business grade DSL which costs $150 a month for 128K... what kind of business can be without service for a week?
