Been reading Kevin Mitnick's book, The Art of Deception. It's a full-dress revelation of the practice of 'social engineering', written by a guy who ought to know. Apparently, his publisher wouldn't allow Kevin to include a bio that doesn't quite support the myth developed in the John Markoff book 'Takedown' (see gulker.com's contemporaneous take on same). Fortunately, those fun-lovers over at "The Register" have published Chapter One: Kevin Mitnick's story. As The Reg points out, why spend days hacking a system when you can get someone to FedEx you the files you want with one or two phone calls?

Maybe the old iMac can be a name server... the broken CD ROM limits its usefulness to say, family who have kids who might want it... but Mac OS X supports the BIND name server... and there's a version that's reasonably secure for the installed OS...I checked, the BIND version on my Linux servers uses the same [very difficult] configuration syntax as Mac OS X's BIND... Mac OS X [knock on wood] is so far less exploited by hackers than Linux...

New iMac was stepson John's Christmas present (I hope he keeps getting those A's at USF!). His old iMac was the original 233 MHz Bondi Blue iMac. Sadly its CD ROM had stopped working so upgrades and software installs were a pain... and John's Old Que USB CD burner (2x, I think) had given up the ghost as well.

So yesterday old iMac came over, went on the network with new iMac and data and programs were copied over. There were something like 100 MB worth of Software Updates waiting for it, which happened more easily on my broadband connection than it would have on John's dialup. We all went to dinner while we were waiting...

Safari news: Doc Searls on Apple and Open Source, Mark Pilgrim's review, and Apple engineer Dave Hyatt's response. I was one of the 300,000 who downloaded it on the first day - I've been using it ever since. It is so much faster than IE for Mac OS X. I set it as the default on my main machine... I'm about to take the IE icon out of the dock...

The two faces of Linux. Cost-effective open-source OS carries security burdens of its own. I'll say... I'm still trying to recover from Slapper and a hacker in my name server... it just takes so long for a casual Linux user to figure out what to do...

Case resigns as AOL chairman. AOL is toast says Doc Searls. The market values AOL at zero, according to Dan Gillmor. Is AOL really wothless? It's certainly not worth its bubble price, but has the pendulum swung too far the other way?

Very cool radio control airplane was built using Photoshop on Mac OS X. The story. Thanks, again, Bahman!

Snake Robots using up to 40 servos and motors are the work of Adobe engineer Dr. Gavin Miller. They're radio-controlled... Bahman Dara sent the link... Bahman builds radio-controlled helicopters that are just beautiful...
