Pretty day in the Bay Area: a storm front that moved through last night left a beautiful sky in the morning and early afternoon, before storm clouds returned.
Stepson John wanted a lift to BART, so we dropped him off at Fremont in the East Bay, and continued on to the Garin/Dry Creek Pioneer complex of parks. The hike couldn't have been prettier: we shared the foothills overlooking the Bay with a herd of cows, lots of hawks and a small herd of mule deer.
There were lots of calves in the cow herd, and their moms were a bit prickly: a cheerful couple we met on the trail asked us if our herd dog, Australian Shepherd Cassie, kept the cows at bay (answer, no, she just wanted to round 'em up and head 'em out). Couldn't have been much prettier...

Wired News: Reporter Takes His Weblog to War. A Manhattan journalist is raising money online so he can travel to Iraqi Kurdistan to cover the impact of a U.S.-Iraq war on the Kurds. His reports and photos will appear not in mainstream media but on his weblog. Interesting, but dangerous? What else will we pay people to do...?

Catching up: Greg Bryant from Workspot at lunch in Palo Alto this past week - we had a good time talking about lots of fun stuff... information gradients, Linux on the Desktop, virtual companies, the prospects for 'self-assembling financing' for startups and more. Greg splits his time between Palo Alto and Oregon... Workspot is just out there in the cloud somewhere... I like that...

Thanks, Anita for the pointer to Lora Brody's book
Slow Cooker Cooking: we've had the Osso Bucco, Lamb Shanks and tonight I'll be braising chicken breasts with the caramelized onions I made last night with Ms. Brody's recipe. Not all of the Amazon reviews are kind... but I've had good luck so far...

Workspot chronicles: I wrote my column for The Independent this week using OpenOffice, the Linux productivity app. The twist was that I was running OpenOffice in my browser, courtesy of Workspot, the Linux ASP that provides a Linux (RH 8.0) desktop in a browser anywhere you can get a Net connection.
I was amazed that the responsiveness was perfectly OK, even over my 144K line that I share with a half-dozen servers including www.gulker.com. Most of the tools I'm used to in MS Office are there in OpenOffice - realtime spell checking etc. (I only wished the word count feature was easier to access). And, while part of this was just to try out this interesting Web service, it actually solved a couple of real problems I had.
One was that Linda and I both needed our big-screen Mac to complete projects, so it was really nice to be able to log off that machine, and resume work on another, regardless of the OS, file location etc. I could move easily from the big-screen Mac, to my laptop to an older machine running a version of Linux without missing a beat.
This column was more difficult than some: I was trying to describe a new concept and its potential impact in 600 words- it required earlier-than-usual intervention and reality checking with long-suffering editor Charles Arthur at The Indy. The Ximian Evolution email client worked well with the OpenOffice word processor - Charles was able to open my column and revision in MS Office and we were able to carry on our dialog via email regardless of which machine I found myself on. It was also nice to be able to leave my work suspended, and return to where I'd left off without a delay to reboot, reload files etc.
So, thumbs up: I look forward to cheaper bandwidth someday, and the attendant better response, but Workspot is useful as is. Next up, I want to try collaborating by sharing the desktop, a Workspot feature...
