In these uncertain times, I again find myself wondering what can I do to make the world a better place. It is clear that the world is becoming smaller, a more interconnected place where, for all the benefits, it is harder to avoid conflicts.
Clearly, future generations will need to be able to think on their feet. They'll need to consider problems from many sides, and carefully weigh the pros and cons of complicated issues. A peaceful, prosperous world will require that we all learn to see that world through the eyes of others.
Without great mentors, and great educational institutions, this won't happen. Jefferson was right: a democracy is absolutely dependent on an educated electorate. One of the greatest mentors I knew, was a guy named Bill Danforth.
Bill's qualities were perfect for these times: he was perceptive, quick and very civil. His soft-spoken manner belied a steelyness, a firm resolve to say and do what he believed was the right thing.
So, I've decided that the best thing I can do now, is to make sure future generations have access to mentors like Bill Danforth. So I've made a pledge to the William Danforth Memorial Scholarship Fund. Invest in people: the returns can last for generations...
