The war is eating my life, again: I spent Gulf War I on the city desk of the old S.F. Examiner, as a picture and layout editor. I would often spend 10 or 12 hours a day framegrabbing (which was new, then) getting pix from the wire services and stringers, and helping make up 5 editions a day - mainly the all-important (for a newstand-sale newspaper) front page.
We almost put the paper out of business: circulation about doubled. When people left work in the afternoon, therer was the Examiner, with photos of Scud attacks, Iraqi troops surrendering, whatever. Unfortunately, the ads had all been sold, weeks in advance, at the old circulation rates. The cost of doubling circulation, while a good problem to have, would have bankrupted a paper with less than the Hearst Corporation's resources.
But, I had an excuse, then. I spent almost the entire day Saturday glued to MSNBC, Web sites, wire feeds et al. I got a few errands done, ran my spouse to the airport (she'll be in NYC for a week), but otherwise spent 90% of the day hearing a rehash of the same story on a hundred diffferent channels. No more war news jones... gotta move on... there may still be some rants, though...
