Chronicle tech columnist suspended for anti-war arrest: Columnist Henry Norr, longtime Mac journalist before landing at the Chron, was suspended without pay after he took a sick day to go to an anti-war rally and wound up in the clink. Chron editor Phil Bronstein says it's because journalists must avoid the appearance of political bias. Tough issue for a writer... when can you be a citizen and act according to your conscience? I swiped the idea: one of the JPL imaging teams, on Magellan I think, had about a dozen different computers and terminals crammed onto a desk... they gaffer-taped keyboards to every available space...  Examiner 'war desk' 1991: this is the photo I was looking for... showing the then state-of-the-art digital picture desk I put together to allow the SF Examiner to rapidly place color war (and other) photos in the paper. Stacked on one end of City Desk (real estate was tight) was a $50,000 Sony frame grabber, a VCR, a Leaf Desk wirephoto system, 2 Macintoshes and a 9" TV set.
Everything was interconnected so an image could be moved rapidly into the main page-make-up Mac... images could also go the other way, say out to the AP... and there was a thin Ethernet connection to the Examiner's digital darkroom, the first in the U.S. (I think)...A single Mac or PC, even a very inexpensive Linux box, could do it all today... |
