Good DRM, DRE and Creative Commons(ad hoc) 'tutorial' from Doc, Lawrence Lessig and Dave Winer. Larry: "I think it is useful and important to distinguish between DRM and DRE digital rights management vs. digital rights expression. DRE is a technology simply (1) to express rights. The management in DRM implies a technology — code both (1) to express rights and (2) to enforce it". Read the whole thing: it's the best 'nutshell' on the topic I've seen recently...  ImageWell redux: Just had a very pleasant email exchange with Hagen Kaye, the author of ImageWell a very useful mini photo app that's particularly nice for bloggers.
My copy stopped working after I installed Mac OS X 10.2.5, or so I thought. Hagen sent me some terminal commands to check to make sure that the ImageWell's BSD underpinnings were working OK. They were, so we next tried dragging ImageWell's plist file (com.xtralean.imagewell.plist - look for it with Finder's 'find' window) to the trash and relaunching. It worked.
I then had trouble moving files, and Hagen exchanged another couple emails, gave me more command line advice and now ImageWell is working fine. The app hangs out in the menu bar, launches instantly (beats waiting for Photoshop launches just to resize 1 image). It has the 80% of tools I want most regularly - crop, caption, resize, image dimensions - and even composes the HTML img tag and puts it on the clipboard (among other features). And the support was excellent... I wish my expensive apps had such a responsive guy on the other end of email... |

MacMinute: The New York Post is claiming that Microsoft has also expressed interest in buying Vivendi's Universal Music Group, "setting up a possible bidding war between the software maker and rival Apple."... Toldya it's a good idea... Bill Gates wants it, too... Comments 2:46:07 PM

Wired News: Apple Computer shares dropped almost 9 percent Friday due to fears that its talks with Vivendi Universal to buy the Universal Music Group would lead to a deal that would bleed Apple dry. Analysts warn that it could risk pulling Apple from its roots as a technology company with a cash hoard that investors like.
