Hacked and hosed: here's the boot screen of our trusty old Pentium box (heh, 133 MHz!), until recently a DNS and Web server at gulker.com. An ISP in Texas was being port scanned from it, so I yanked it off the air. Finally found time to dig into it... and as you can see the news isn't good (those aren't Roman characters on the screen - click to enlarge). What on earth did the kiddies do this time...?

MPAA and Free Speech: "We're all for it when its our right to free speech."

From an MPAA press release:

'Jack Valenti today hailed a unanimous ruling by the California Court of Appeals: “This is a tremendous victory not only for the studios involved in the case, but for anyone who values the rights granted by the First Amendment.” '

So, is that only movie studios who deserve 1st Amendment protection? What about programmers? You might also be interested in a Jack Valenti treatise on the 'moral imperative' in society... we all know what authorities on morality movie studios constitute...

Hollywood vs. Free Speech: The Merc has a story about the Hollywood lobby's attempts to limit free speech on the Net. "Hollywood has heavyweight backing in the case, including companies like Ford Motor, AOL-Time Warner and Boeing that warn free speech protections, in this instance, should be trumped by trade secret protections..." Dan Gillmor comments here. Remember when Hollywood types used to argue *for* free speech?

Digital Music a medium reborn: "Years of paralyzing litigation, industry intransigence and failed strategies are finally giving way to promising efforts backed by major labels and artists--most notably Apple Computer's new iTunes Music Store." Also notes Yahoo Music and other signs that RIAA is looking more like the 'Dinosaur's Club'...
