Copyright dispute leaves 3000 dead: and we think we have problems. Columba, an Irish monk in the 6th century, made a copy, by hand, of Jerome's psalter, after borrowing the book from Finnian, his former master.
Finnian, who had made the long and then-dangerous journey to Rome to fetch the book, claimed that, by rights, the copy should belong to him.The dispute was brought to King Diarmaid who ruled for Finnian. "To every cow her calf, and to every book its son-book."
Columba "did not accept the judgment with grace." When Diarmaid's men killed one of Columba's kin in his monastery, in violation of asylum, a bloody battle ensued that left 3000 dead.Note that no one was worried about Jerome's rights... Gavin and Bernie will likely have opinions on this one... tale found in (the highly recommended) All Saints by Robert Ellsburg...

OS X, under the hood: it ain't pretty. So we got panFora running, figured it out even before the helpful folks at panFora support sent us clueful advice. But sendmail isn't working on the iMac in question, so forum registrants can't get their emailed passwords (not good). So I sent a note off to panFora support, and, in the interim, discovered this tidbit at O'Reilly:
As those of you who've updated to Mac OS X 10.1.5 have discovered, sendmail no longer works as described in Learning the Mac OS X Terminal, Part 3. The 10.1.5 version updates sendmail to 8.12.2 from 8.11, and in the process tightened up security considerably.
In short, what you need to do is generate a new sendmail.cf file from scratch, using the m4 "macro language processor." You'll also need to change some permissions, as well as configure your system to run the sendmail daemon at startup. (This was not necessary for sending local mail in 10.1.4 and earlier, but apparently is now). Finally, my Mac OS and Linux worlds merge... stuck in config/version hell...
