Kitchen Cam, the hack: well, with the charity celeb chef event taking place tonight at gulker.com, we figured this was as good an excuse as any for a hack. We want to put a live web cam in the kitchen, and also archive a time-lapse set of shots that we can later assemble into a QuickTime movie.
First trick was to get the QuickCam (the one that Keith Teare's new company gave me at the AlwaysOn conference) mounted on the wall at one end of the kitchen (and Keith, we're still waiting for the Linux or OS X port of your app...). The camera is very light, so scotch tape and a paper clip attached to a molding with a wood screw, did the trick.
Next up, we had to figure out how to get the cam's cable (USB) to a 'puter that could grab the image and move it onto the Web server. The cam only has a 3-foot tail, and we needed to get about 12 feet over to a Mac Cube which is already running the gulker.com cam. Solution included a 3-foot USB extension cord, and a small SIIG powered USB hub scotch-taped to the other side of the molding with a 6-foot USB A to B cord stretching to the Mac.
The Cube's USB ports are full, so I had to go into the keyboard hub, which meant moving the mouse to the left side (and I'm a righty). Sub-optimal, but it'll do for tonight. Last step was to download the Logitech driver, and reconfigure the EvoCam software to handle 2 cameras - one on FireWire, one on USB. Hehe...the picture above is live BTW... updates every 5 minutes... will set that interval to maybe 1 minute tonite...
