Linux on the Desktop, v 2.0: it's a whole new world, now that suits, not geeks, are promoting Linux on the desktop. And it's not just a few suits (from presos/press confernces/interviews at LinuxWorld):

Novell: "The desktop is the next big thing for Linux."

Sun: [papraphrasing] "If you send a call center to Bangalore, are you really going to spend $400 to put an OS and productivity suite on each of hundreds or thousands of $399 computers?"

Xandros: "We already have customers in South America" where, presumably, the cost of software means the difference between deploying modern IT or staying with paper-based systems.

SuSe: looking at medium to large enterprises where the price will be an issue.

Red Hat: reiterated commitment to desktop Linux even as it announced a Web apps strategy.

At least 5 companies are beginning to see an opportunity for well-integrated, relatively-easy-to-use Linux desktops in price-sensitive markets. Microsoft's move to capitalize on their monopoly position by raising prices appears to have convinced more than one management team that an opportunity now exists in the heart of MS' market...

Robots vs. Tux: the big fun today at LinuxWorld was a demo of SRI's Centibots project, wherein autonomous robots were let loose in a maze that contained a penguin. The bots had been shown a picture of the penguin, and their job was to find it, which this contender, #35, did (although #34, the first entrant, never made it out of the starting gate). #34 and #35 are 2 of 100 robots that the SRI project can deploy into very large spaces along with a couple of special-purpose laser mapping robots. Working cooperatively, the robots can map and discover arbitrary objects without human control. Possible applications include scouting disaster scenes for survivors... the robots use Via Mini-ATX boards, Debian Linux, Java and Jini...

Robin 'Roblimo' Miller and Penelope Penguin snapped at LinuxWorld, fueling rumors that the pair are 'an item'. 'I've never been photographed with a penguin' protested Miller. Said Penelope, 'No comment'...

Just for fun we brought Webcam2 along to LinuxWorld - this is the QuickCam I got from Keith Teare's new ccompany at the AlwaysOn conference. So, greetings from the press room, via WiFi... pretty boring, but I can't find a reliable WiFi connection on the main floor...

Europe to Microsoft: last chance to clean up your act. "European Union antitrust regulators Wednesday charged Microsoft Corp. with ongoing antitrust abuses and gave the company a final chance to modify its software and business practices." From WSJ, subscription required...

Looking Glass, Sun's next generation desktop is projected on a big screen during Jonathan Schwartz's LinuxWorld keynote. Shown is a stack of CDs, complete with graphics, that fan out when clicked so you can leaf through them. All the objects on screen are 3D and can be 'picked up' and viewed from any angle. Guy in foreground is a sign-language interpreter...
