Evolution is cool: for Mac heads, it's iCal, Address Book and Mail wrapped into one package that also gives you weather and news. It's as if a part of the vision of the Eazel gang has finally taken root in an environment where people are very serious about providing an easy-to-use tool for the 'rest of us'. It's nicer and more intuitive that Outlook on Windows IMHO...

Here's a screen shot of the Ximian desktop running on a 1GHz AMD machine I built last year. Performance is very usable despite an inexpensive video card. So far the apps have been easy to learn and useful (pictured is Evolution, a nice email and calendaring app that also let's me read RSS feeds. I can get to the AMD from the Mac via netatalk running on the Intel machine. Now I need NFS running on the Mac so I can easily move things back and forth depending on which machine I'm at...

Our Linux Desktop is up and running... or rather I am up and running on it. Configuration and preferences on Ximian's XD2 desktop were no more difficult than on a Windows 2000 machine, and almost as easy as Mac OS X. The Ximian downloader/installer was the most pleasant such experience I've had on Linux, even considering the 10-hour download. So here's our first blog post from the new Linux desktop. We'll be working for one week completely on Linux, details on the blog...
