Sobig's noon attack fizzles: virus just visited a porn site. Sheesh...

2 of sobig's 20 IP addresses ares till on the air:

Just pinged the list of 20: 2 are still responding, if slowly:

Here's Sobig worm's list of IP addresses. Block 'em...

At noon today, S.F. time, the sobig worm is supposed to launch a secret program from 20 hacked broadband machines, according to F-Secure. Law enforcement has shut down 12 of the machines, but they're not likely to get them all before the virus author uploads some likely nefarious app. Whoa! Stay tuned...

Democratization of computing: was chatting with Robin Miller this AM, at least as well as we could with a massive downpour pounding the roof at Robin's Florida home. The conversation was wide-ranging - everything from Open Source developers on the West Bank to the vulnerability of the power grid to worms and virii.

One topic was, what happens when computers get really cheap? Robin points out you can already buy $199 machines from Wal Mart ($297 with monitor) running various Linux distros. Via and other companies have motherboards that retail for around $100 that are becoming popular: I don't think it will be too long before $100 computers will be available.

Huge numbers of people could afford $100 computers, and I think the consequences will be profound. $100 TVs are already changing vast populations (Muslim countries come to mind). And Linux and Open Source will be vital components of that revolution: people who buy $100 machines will be unlikely to plunk down $400 for MS software to run on those boxes. Interesting times... where technology is likely, yet again, to have a wholly unforeseen social impact...

Nachi, the 'benevolent' worm has so far been responsible for shutting down a railroad and a hospital among other institutions. Please tell me no one is running a nuclear power plant on Windows... What? They are?
