G5 supercluster with 1100 twin-CPU nodes is rumored to be under construction at Virginia Tech. The machines were supposedly the first off the assembly line, and rushed out because VT and Apple want to see the machine up and running this year, so it has a chance at a top 5 slot on the supercomputer list. I played with a 1.6 GHz G5 at the Apple Store today... it really is very fast...

CDs are dead according to Forrester Research. "By 2008, 33 percent of music sales will come from downloads, with CD sales down 30 percent from their 1999 peak... As a result, we're about to see a massive power shift in the entertainment industry." They think retailers, not necessarily record cos. and movie studios, will be the big losers...

Scary: setting up a new Windows machine. we haven't been running a Windows machine since Slammer grabbed my Win2K machine behind a firewall - it is amazing how well you can do entirely on Mac or Linux. So I was setting up a new WIndows XP install for a project: not only did it cost $169 just to upgrade from Win2K, but my brand new XP install required 32 MB of 'critical' patches out of the box: and I sure wasn't going to run it without all the latest updates. Slammer brought our LAN to its knees, and that was it for Windows at gulker.com... at least until now...

Since midnight, I've received 26 bounces of email that one or another worm, mostly SoBig has sent with my forged return address. Keep in mind I almost never use a Windows mail client: this traffic comes entirely from Outlook Express users who had me in their mail databases. So even if you use Mac or Linux, you're still seeing MS' handiwork...
