Gnome and Linux have both improved incredibly since I began using them 5 years ago. That they are now approaching full equality with commercial products that have been under development for longer than the open source movement has been around says something about the viability, and capability of the open source model.
Sun has released Java Desktop System as a beta: it's 99% Gnome and Linux (and OpenOffice.org and Mozilla and Evolution) with 1% veneer and polish - and it's an importants 1% - from a company that is deeply experienced in enterprise computing. Novell/Ximian is another enterprise that will be offering a very capable enterprise desktop based on open source.
The question is, can companies in the future not use open source as a part, or even the foundation of their business, as Apple Computer does with BSD-based Mac OS X? When you can have tens of thousands of open source developers essentially for free, why would you choose to go it completely alone?
