Halloween on Oak Knoll Lane: normally, stepson John handles the decorations, but he was booked this year. So we had our buddy Peninsula Pete help us out. That's him in the chair. So far 83 mini-goblins have visited...

NFS shares on Linux and Mac OS X: I have not been able to get my Mac OS X box mount the NFS share on my Linux box. The Linux box can see the Mac, which also runs NFS, but can't open any directories.
When I was running Sun's demo of the Java Desktop System, a tweaked version of Gnome running on SuSE Linux 8.2, the shares mounted in both directions.
I found this MandrakeSoft page, but I still get errors mount_nfs: can't access /home/gulker: Permission denied on the Mac. At the moment the workaround is for the Mac to mount the Red Hat machine via ASIP, and Red Hat mounts Mac via SMB, but that seems a little silly since they're both *NIX boxes...

iPhoto 2 runs agonizingly slowly on my 500MHz Power Mac G4 since I installed Panther. It was slow on Jaguar, but now it's nearly useless. Yeah, yeah, go buy a G5...

Xfile solves Finder's problems, according to its maker Rixstep. Xfile is supposed to be very fast and not suffer from the confusion and lock-ups you sometimes see in the Mac's Finder. Cool... but the subscription model is a bit baffling...

Panther install bug wipes external hard drives, according to Wired. The install directions tell you to backup to an external drive before installing. Ouch...
