Halloween on Oak Knoll Lane: normally, stepson John handles the decorations, but he was booked this year. So we had our buddy Peninsula Pete help us out. That's him in the chair. So far 83 mini-goblins have visited...

NFS shares on Linux and Mac OS X: I have not been able to get my Mac OS X box mount the NFS share on my Linux box. The Linux box can see the Mac, which also runs NFS, but can't open any directories.

When I was running Sun's demo of the Java Desktop System, a tweaked version of Gnome running on SuSE Linux 8.2, the shares mounted in both directions.

AlwaysOn Network: "Life is good again here in Silicon Valley. A lot different, but good. Gone are the dot-bombers who carried big titles, had little experience, and drove up rents in San Francisco. Gone are big expense accounts and the trendy restaurants that helped you use them. No longer is Highway 280 backed up to San Mateo for those driving into Sunnyvale, and you can now drive through downtown Palo Alto in less than 10 minutes." Noticed that the traffic was better, anyway...

Xfile solves Finder's problems, according to its maker Rixstep. Xfile is supposed to be very fast and not suffer from the confusion and lock-ups you sometimes see in the Mac's Finder. Cool... but the subscription model is a bit baffling...

Panther install bug wipes external hard drives, according to Wired. The install directions tell you to backup to an external drive before installing. Ouch...
