The RIAA is suing Ernest Brenot, 79, of Ridgefield, WA for offering 774 songs by Vanilla Ice, U2, Creed, Linkin Park and Guns N' Roses. Brenot, in handwritten note to a judge, notes that he neither owns a computer nor knows how to operate one. His wife is offended at the notion that they listen to such music. The story. How utterly clueless is the RIAA, one wonders...

The Thiruvananthapuram telephone directory, which serves the Indian province of Kerala, was typeset and laid out using open source software. Custom libraries extracted subscriber data from an old DOS version of dBase into PostgreSQL and piped to TeX, with final print ready PDFs being generated from pdfTeX. Where there's a will... system is said to have laid out 300 pages a minute...

The Joe-Job: a reader suggests that the bounces I'm seeing are actually a Joe-Job, wherein someone who doesn't like me for some reason has sent out a flood of spam with my return address on it, in the hopes of getting me blackholed, blacklisted or dropped by my ISP. Heh, aren't people wonderful?

Mailbox this AM is full of bounces from AOL - of messages I never sent. Looks like some virus has sent a few dozen copies of itself using my email address as the return address. Which creature is this? Subject lines are 'Hello' and 'Check this out'...
