Christmas on Mars: Beagle 2 is scheduled to land on Mars at 2:45 AM GMT, December 25, which is 6:45 PM December 24 here in Silicon Valley. Fingers crossed... and it's supposed to take another 4 hours until NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter passes within radio range......

Just finished making the Silver Palate recipe for mashed potatoes for special occasions, a Sunset recipe for yams (with banana and vanilla), and helped spouse Linda make her famous stuffing for tomorow's Christmas dinner. Time for a Winter Solstice Ale... and KFOG's rock 'n roll holiday tunes...

Picture hijacking has always struck me as rude. When people hijack the pix I post on gulker.com, I get to pay the bandwidth bill for pictures they take, invariably without asking or giving credit. My biggest gripe is popular chat forums - one such in China ate almost all of gulker.com's bandwidth when they hijacked a photo. Not a single forum webmaster has ever responded to my email, much less removed the offending photo link (and some of the forums have been icky, to put it mildly).
Friend Roger Ridey had pointed me to a fix at one point, which info I mislaid. Fortunately for Roger (so I don't have to bug him again), a new O'Reilly title, Apache Cookbook has a recipe for blocking images when the referrer is outside the domain. You can place the following in .htaccess in the image directory (or in the appropriate Directory container in httpd.conf):
<FilesMatch "\.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png)$">
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://([^/]*\.)?gulker.com/" local_referer=1
RewriteRule %ENV{local_referer| !1 /hijack-100x100.png [L]
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from env=local_referer
</FilesMatch>
It's not working yet, so I think I need to dig in httpd.conf to make sure something else isn't overiding. Hopefully this will get some of my bandwidth back....
