New media types: Looking at Jook Leung's QTVR work, I realized that VR is clearly maturing - at least to the point that you see work like Leung's, which really isn't just photography. And VR is a computer-mediated medium: it doesn't translate to video particularly well, much less print.
So. Huge numbers of people have computers and reasonable bandwidth: where are the practitioners of uniquely computer-hosted media?
So much of the web is just using the medium as if it were print. True, you can deliver more cheaply and immediately, but the vast majority of web content is basically rich text - about what newspapers and magazines have offered since the early 19th century.
New media types tend to rise slowly, mainly because whole populations grow up with media habits - like newspapers or television - and don't immediately see a reason to switch. It often takes something special - like the famous 'I Love Lucy' series that helped launch television - to start the uptake of a new medium.
For people with a serious interest in photography, Leung's work will provide a compelling reason to investigate the medium. The 3D photos NASA is preparing to release from Mars will be another, and likely even more popular reason to consider VR. As William Gibson once said "The future is here: it's just not evenly distributed"...
