Is the music biz losing its franchise? Interesting that none of the leaders in the nascent music downloading business is a record company. Computer and tech companies and a big retailer are all jostling for the lead that's currently owned by Apple's iTunes.

The music companies were too busy trying to keep the status quo, filing lawsuits against 12-year-olds and otherwise sticking their head in the sand. They seem to be a classic case of 'herd' mentality. I think it was Stephen Jay Gould who wrote that organisms in a successful Darwinian niche tend to resist evolution and push evolutionary organisms out of their midst. If you got a good thing, why rock the boat?

Which is fine until the meteors come streaking in, and the world starts changing. Then, Houston, we got a problem: if we've been busily pushing all of those wacky, evolved types out of our midst, we may not have what it takes to survive in the new world and its new niches. More in abit...

From his letter to Isaac McPherson: "No one seriously disputes that property is a good idea, but it’s bizarre to suggest that ideas should be property. Nature clearly wants ideas to be free! While you can keep an idea to yourself, as soon as you share it anyone can have it... And no matter how many people share it, the idea is not diminished.
