A former newspaperperson, I rarely write to newspapers in the Bay Area, much less elsewhere, but this unsigned San Diego Tribune editorial, which I'll wager is representative of that which is being written by tragically blind minds elsewhere, prompted this response:

Editorial Page Editors
San Diego Union Tribune

Dear Editors,Good Americans, whatever our race, religion or political leanings, reserve the right to disagree, sometimes vehemently, as much as we pledge to fight for our fellow American's rights to express their opinions, however much we may disagree with them.

Your editorial of February 17,"San Francisco sanctions same-sex marriage" is one that prompts me, who rarely writes to newspapers, to most vehemently disagree.

Your editorial is sure to stand alongside those of authors who once disdained marriage between races (I presume you share no such prejudice), of those who wrote against granting women the vote and other rights, and indeed, of those who once wrote in support of slavery.

The best science available, as I'm sure the San Diego Tribune's educated editors are well aware, shows that 7% of almost every population that has been studied are homosexual. It's been some 30 years, I think, since 'homosexual' was removed from the classification of 'mental illness.'

Homosexual people, like African American, and Hispanic and Asian and Caucasian and almost every other kind of creature a higher power has seen fit to create, should fully share the rights of their peers. The accident of birth should not be a reason to discriminate, whether it's race or gender preference at issue.

San Diego County has just as many homosexual people as any other. Look around your newsroom: what is it, that sparks you, in the name of 'law' and popular bigotry, to espouse prejudice against the one in 11 of your colleagues who happens to be homosexual?

I detest what you say, but, as a fellow American, I guess I have to defend your right to say it.

Sincerely,

Chris Gulker

For the record I emailed this, with all the identifying info required of op-ed responses, to the Tribune. I doubt they'll see fit to print it, as much as I doubt they see the hatred that is the impetus for their words ...

Brain 'fingerprints' are apparently admissable in U.S. courts according to the BBC. News to me... and a little scary...
