Hate speech: It's hard to imagine I could become even more disappointed with an elected official, But Gov. Schwarzenegger's words over the weekend are just irresponsible. He cited "rioting" as being the reason to deny marriage to gay and lesbian people, when in fact, the whole process has been remarkably peaceful. How many other people stand in line, in the rain for more than 8 hours without incident?
He likened granting marriage licenses to granting licenses for assault rifles and illegal drugs. What on earth? Guns and drugs hurt people. Saying "I do" affirms people.
And the Governor should know better than most the power of words. He was born in Austria, a nation which learned harder than most the lesson of hate rhetoric in the 30s and 40s.
He is now an American, a nation where hate speech and racial violence were once so common that a popular song, Strange Fruit was written about the "black bodies swinging in the Southern breeze."
People get hurt when the awful rhetoric starts: is this a history lesson we want to repeat? I think the Governor is more interested in courting the right wing the Republican party than protecting the lives of California citizens who happen to be gay...
