Core memory: thinking about gulker.com's new, private IP network (core.gulker.com), I rambled through Googled docs on core memory. Whoa... talk about experimental... the top picture shows what is described as the first magnetic core memory, from the 1952 IBM 405 Alphabetical Accounting Machine.
Bottom pic shows a 4.5-inch square 1024 bit plane from a 50s-era UNIVAC stack, which would have consisted of 8 planes. These cores were knitted by women, according to the source, using very fine needles and stereo microscopes. Each plane cost $6000 (very serious money in the 50s) making a 1 kilobyte stack worth $48,000 - about twice the price of a 2000 square foot house in a desirable neighborhood in Silicon Valley in that era. 16K of RAM used to come in a box about the size of a refrigerator...
