We're back from Argentina and Uruguay... and I'm still trying to process all the amazing things we saw. It was our first trip south of Mexico. Buenos Aires, our fist stop, has 14 million people - it's an amazing sprawl of light from the air, at night. Imagine a town that is equal parts Paris, New York and Mexico City with wide boulevards and lots of parks, and you'll have an idea.

Argentina is still recovering from a devaluation of its currency - by a factor of 4 - that left 40% of the country below the poverty line. Despite the economics, crime is low in Buenos Aires: Linda and I hiked completely across the city, including the La Boca neighborhood (pictured above), and by day, anyway, felt safe. Unlike Mexico City, where machine-gun-toting police and soldiers are posted in front of every bank and grand hacienda, Buenos Aires feels like a European city with a mix of 19th-century and more modern buildings.
