"Intangible assets - a skilled workforce, patents and know-how, software, strong customer relationships, brands, unique organizational designs and processes, and the like - generate most of corporate growth and shareholder value." - Baruch Lev writing in Harvard Business Review. He goes on to note that R&D is way undervalued, and so are exercises like brand building and training. While returns are excellent, they lag the investment considerably, resulting in higher costs of capital and a reluctance to invest in future R&D, especially basic research (even though it provides a higher return). This market is inefficient, which holds back the very innovation that creates most shareholder value going forward.
