John Hubbard, a portrait of my father-in-law: continuing in the black-and-white photos we've made recently. John is 93 - he has been an avid amateur photographer (and water colorist) all of his life. He was also a hiker who, as a young man, walked the 100 miles from Tahoe to Yosemite Valley by himself (when his hiking companion couldn't make it).
This is another shot from the Digilux 2, at ISO 400. It looks amazingly like Tri-X (see rant, post below). The stepping of gray shades from the shadow to the lit side of John's face looks a lot like some of my most treasured Tri-X compositions.
Close up, the Leica images, and the 'grain' of the photos is different from the film images. There is a range of enlargement however, where the effect is amazingly similar to analog. Here's an 1185-pixel-wide image, and here's the full (cropped) image.
John and I share 3 loves: Linda (John's daughter, my wife), photography, and hiking. The hikes in Yosemite that John planned for me and stepson John live in our memories as the best times of our lives. I learned to love walking from John, as did his daughter: it has been a sustaining and joyous part of our lives since. Spent the day shooting B&W on a glorious hike at Half Moon Bay... pix TK...
