Big news: stepson John proposed to sweetheart Julie Brown last night, in Berkeley. Julie said yes! John had been working all week on 'the plan,' which finally worked out to this: John called Julie to say he was running late, and would meet her at a favorite sushi bar in Berkeley. When Julie arrived, she was handed a pretty lavender sheet that said "To see the FUTURE you must visit the PAST" and contained the anagram "Risks Our Fist." We were all worried that Julie wouldn't resolve the anagram to "Our First Kiss," but John assured us that Julie is good with anagrams. Then I asked "What if she doesn't remember your first kiss?," to which John replied "The way I kiss, they remember." So it all worked out: Julie found John, he presented the dazzling ring, and Julie cried. Then they both got on their cell phones and told the world...

Barbeque: so, last night, I cooked baby back pork ribs (from Trader Joe's), with chili beans (slow-cooked for 2 hours) and cole slaw (cheated - bought it from Draegers'). I'm very fond of Trader Joe's offerings: prices are rock bottom, and quality is somewhere way north of that.
It was BBQ two ways: I slow cooked the ribs (2 hours at 300º, and basted them with Trader Joe's Kansas City BBQ sauce for the last 30 minutes - it's the best cheap BBQ sauce - and maybe the best bottled BBQ sauce, period). I cooked the beans from scratch, using Mark Bittman's recipe from his book "How to Cook Everything.".
Trader Joe's sauce is sweet and smoky: Bittman's beans were savory and sharp. Worked out pretty well. Most of the dishes I've learned to cook are French or Italian: I want to learn how to cook American dishes...
