Musical disappointments: downloaded the free Joss Stone cut from the GAP site. Walked through the whole Windows DRM thing, 4.4 MB downloaded to my Mac. Yay! Can't wait to hear the dusky tones of Ms. Stone. Launched in Windows Media Player 9 for Mac - then got a dialog "Cannot open file. Verify that the path and filename are correct and try again."

After much digging, we find this passage on microsoft.com:

Although it is usually possible to play protected files by using Windows Media Player 9 Series for Mac OS X, in some cases you may encounter one of the following issues: The Player displays the error message "Cannot open the file. Verify that the path and file name are correct and try again." In this case, verifying the path and file name will not solve the problem.

Must be nice having a monopoly position. You don't have to fix bugs.

So then I race over to Yahoo Music, which just announced $5-a-month 'all you can eat' music licensing. Yay! I'm ready to sign up! Until I see the specs for the Yahoo Music Engine:

Yahoo! Music Engine Software
Microsoft Windows XP or 2000
Internet Explorer 6.0+

Sheesh. Actually, some of this is Apple's fault... my thoughts on same TK in a bit...

Mac OS X Tiger finally showed up last night from Amazon. First bug, Tiger puts up a dialog saying it doesn't recognize my Apple keyboard. It asks me to press a key, and then says "You've pressed a key on your internal keyboard. Please press a key on your external keyboard." Eh? This is a G5 tower, no internal keyboard.

NetNewsWire won't launch at all. I see a couple of 10.4 bugs logged over at Brett Simon's Ranchero Software site, but I seem to be the only user with a full, repeatable crash on launch. Lucky me. So we're back to the old-fashioned browser interface on the Radio server on The Core, gulker.com's internal, experimental LAN.

Virex seems to be running, though I think I'd heard there were issues, and Mail is busy importing 43,000 emails and I'm guessing Spotlight is busy indexing everything. Lot of HD access at the moment. More on Tiger after I've had some time to poke around...
