Real ID, Real Bad Idea: Bruce Schneier has a thoughtful analysis on the month's Crypto-Gram. Real ID was passed without discussion or debate, and it's a badly though-out plan that actually reduces security. Another part of Real ID is aimed at reducing appeals in immigration cases, widely scene as a Republican shot at San Francisco's 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The Freedom of Speech Restoration Act is a bill that would allow churches to endorse candidates and campaigns without jeopardizing their tax-exempt status. The bill is sponsored by Republican Representative Walter Jones of North Carolina.
I like the response from Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver (a Misouri Democrat) who is laso a United Methodist pastor in (and a former mayor of) Kansas City. "When the church and the state sleep together, the church rises the next day without respect. The church must retain its purity." Amen... the Chron has the story... |
