The crane hotel in Harlingen, Netherlands: I'm finally getting around to putting up some pix of the Netherlands trip. One of the features of said trip was a night spent in the crane pictured here. An entrepreneur has converted Harlingen harbor's crane, lighthouse and a former lifeboat into very comfortable hotel rooms (leave it to Linda to find things like this).
We picked the crane and had a wonderful time. Regrettably, the steering mechanism died shortly before we arrived and I wasn't able to drive (actually rotate) the crane, but otherwise we had a ball. We ate a sunset dinner foraged from the delis and cheese shops in Harlingen. As it happened, our shopping expedition coincided with a charming, traditional parade through the streets by all of Harlingen's school children.
It was amazingly interesting to just watch the harbor traffic come and go. We sipped wine (in moderation, according to the crane's safety requirements), lounged on the deck on top of the crane and I played with the crane's high tech lighting and HVAC controls. In the morning, the local bakery put a basket of breakfast goodies in the elevator and sent it up. Highly recommended...
