Ford Hybrid club: friends Gail and Libby bought a red Escape Hybrid in February. They'll be up for stepson John's wedding next month, and we can compare notes. Libby says they love it after 5 months. HowStuffWorks has an article on the Ford Hybrid - this page gives a good overview. Here's Edmunds' review. "Evolution in the sense of common ancestry might be true, but evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense - an unguided, unplanned process of random variation and natural selection - is not." So writes Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, archbishop of Vienna: scientists are reacting with "confusion, dismay and even anger" according to a NYT front page piece.
Schonborn dismisses the pro-evolution commentary of the late John Paul II as "vague and unimportant." The Cardinal's own essay seems to borrow from the Discovery Institute (main promoter of the so-called intelligent design movement which attempts to block the teaching of evolution in American schools). Indeed, that institute's PR firm submitted the essay to the Times. Moving the 21st century church back to the 16th century? Shall we re-start the Inquisition? Troubling, but the church has a long history of men who say and do awful things in the name of God... |
