It is hard to believe that we've come to this: the IRS is threatening to revoke the tax-free status of All Saints Church in Pasadena (full disclosure, Linda and I were members there for about 10 years). The reason? A guest preacher, the former rector, Dr. George Regas, preached an anti-war sermon shortly before the 2004 presidential election. Dr. Regas did not recommend voting against Bush or for Kerry, or vice versa. He simply did what every minister who claims to follow Jesus must do: he preached peace.
This is such an egregious intrusion of the state upon religion and free speech that even fundamentalist churches are lining up in support of All Saints. That the IRS would decide to go after the liberal All Saints for preaching peace, when thousands of conservative congregations in that same time frame preached the virtues of anti-abortion et al., begs coincidence. I am unaware of any IRS action against any of those congregations.
I've known George Regas for almost 25 years. He is a man of wonderful conscience and deep moral conviction: he is a very fine preacher, little diminished by his perhaps 75 years on this planet. I suppose I'm inviting an audit by writing this, but when did the IRS get the job of attempting to silence people of the moral stature of George Regas?
