Orders of magnitude: every so often I have one of those experiences that brings home how fast technology is evolving. Ten years ago, I was a relatively new employee at Apple Computer, working on the 'Shiner' project. Shiner eventually had a short life (13 months) as Apple's UNIX server (aka The Apple Network Server). Needless to say, it was not a success. As a reminder, I've had one in my family room ever since.
Saturday, while I was at Fry's picking up the new camera, I also picked up a Western Digital Netcenter 250 GB hard drive (we're low on backup room on the LAN). After I configured the Netcenter (it has an Ethernet port - you set it up with a web browser and a helper app), I got up from my chair and was confronted by Shiner (which serves as a printer stand nowadays). It occurred to me that the book-sized NetCenter does almost everything that Apple Network Server could do: it has a web server, file sharing (CFIS and NFS) and printer sharing. No email server or DNS, but it has more than 25 times the storage in a package less than 1/10th the size that links to the LAN at 100 mbps (vs. 10 mbps). At $279, Netcenter is also considerably cheaper than the $19,000 ANS...
