The great paper to digital experiment is now under way. I finally got my new Fujitsu ScanSnap, a fast, one-button, 2-sided color scanner unpacked and hooked up to our Mac mini. Embarrassingly, Acrobat Pro and Standard refuse to install on the Mini (I'm guessing it's a weird permissions problem), but Preview makes do for a quick look for the time being.
So far I've scanned about a hundred things - statements, receipts, bank notices et al., which paper goes directly into the recycling while the digital version goes onto the Mini's HD on its way to the half-terabyte array. We will need Acrobat to OCR the scans, so they'll be searchable (Acrobat 7 does very nice OCR, and it has a batch mode), so I'm going to get busy sleuthing the install problem (first Mac I've ever seen balk at an Acrobat install). The scans, which are print quality, take just under 10 MB of disk space. I'm still having trouble recycling the most important papers after they're scanned...
