Picasaweb: I got in 'line' for the recently-announced Picasa Web Albums like other good netizens by sending an email requesting an invitation. A few hours later I had my very own, free 250 MB of Picasa web space. Unfortunately, my brand new Linux version of Picasa doesn't yet support direct upload, but Picasa Web supports http uploads (5 photos at a time), and include tools that let you choose a cover photo, add captions and do other basic editing. One nice touch is RSS feeds - people can subscribe
The ridiculous asymmetry of my Comcast connection (4 mbps down, but only 128K or so up - a 32x difference) means uploading 15 full-res pictures is very slow, but that's life with without consumer choice, courtesy of the FCC. Cutting picture size in half reduces file size by 3/4, and makes for zippier uploads, and provides a good web experience. Full-res uploads are useful for pictures - holidays, birthdays etc. - where viewers may wish to download and print the files. For $25 I can get 6 GB of additional space...
