Check your credit card statement for small charges - typically $9.95 from an odd sounding company - "Moball Cape Charles VA" and "U Web Template" are two. Dozens, probably hundreds of people are noting these fraudulent charges on web sites and blogs going back to October - none of the companies seem to exist, and one commentator thinks this is the activity of thieves checking large lists of credit card data for good accounts. If the cardholder doesn't cancel the card, the thieves can come back later on for a bigger score on a now known-good account. While credit card holders may not be liable for charges (though it could be different for debit card users who are also getting hit), we all pay for this eventually in higher fees...  Busy weekend: Saturday we did the long jog, then browsed tile stores for ideas for a much-delayed remodel project. Sunday saw us briefly at the Concours d'Elegance, a charity benefit car show with lots of fun old and exotic cars at Stanford (blogged by Linda), shopping at Sigona's for produce and Schaub's for their famous marinated tri-tip (aka Fred's Steak) before retiring to the kitchen to prepare a movable feast for friends Anne Peterson, Stuart Coxhead, Peter and Sarah Bostock and Michael and Frannie Hall-Kieschnick. Anne and Stuart were just back from the Episcopal Convention (Ann sporting a button proclaiming "It's a Girl!" in reference to our presiding bishop-elect) and recounted the ebb and flow of events. Dinner was served on the Hall-Kieschnick's very pleasant patio in Palo Alto - I had a great time. Menu: 'top-secret' cole slaw, Greek salad, haricots Provencale and barbecued Fred's Steak. It's fun cooking for friends... |
