Happy 4th to all: and let us hope the Republic survives its many challenges, both internal and external. We listened to New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band this evening at Stanford's Frost amphitheater: they were great - a number of musicians playing instruments salvaged from Katrina - especially late in the set when they let that unmistakable Nawlins back beat creep into their last numbers. Everybody was on their feet, a dance line followed the mardi gras umbrellas on stage: we were all having a ball. The fireworks were icing on the cake...
